Each month we host a live webinar featuring the latest in charge controller and off-grid inverter technologies. Attendees have the opportunity to engage directly with our engineers to learn about the latest innovations in off-grid solar, and have their questions answered directly by our team.
From our May 26 free monthly webinar, Morningstar Solar Charge Controllers & Inverters
Q: Does Morningstar recommend deploying fuses or circuit breakers in off-grid systems, and if so how are these sized?
During a recent webinar we mentioned that fuses or circuit breakers are recommended in your off-grid applications to help protect wires from getting too hot, and to protect system components in the event of a short circuit. Regarding fuse/breaker sizing between the solar charge controller and the battery, we recommend 1.25 times the current rating of the charge controller, or the next higher fuse/breaker size. If you were using a 15 amp ProStar PWM controller, for example, 1.25 x 15 amps = 18.75, so you would use a 20 amp fuse/breaker.
