Solar charge controllers use one of two technologies:
Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) or Pulse Width Modulation (PWM)

Can convert all the solar electricity voltage possible into useable electricity. MPPT's maximum conversion efficiency is ideal for areas where seasonal, weather and shading conditions cause wide variations in solar “harvesting.” Because of additional circuitry, MPPT is more complex and expensive. PWM technology
(Pulse-Width Modulation)
Used in places with consistent sunlight, minimal shading and no physical space limitations—such as at the top of light poles, for example. PWM controllers are simpler and more cost effective, ideal for use in systems where extracting every last watt of electricity possible from a PV array is not a concern
